Right from its name, the War Remnants Museum speaks volumes about its essence. It is a place that holds both the heroism and the tragic history of a nation in particular, and humanity in general, in the struggle for peace.
Established on September 4, 1975, the War Remnants Museum is part of Vietnam’s museum system and is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the International Network of Museums for Peace (INMP). The museum specializes in researching, collecting, preserving, and displaying images, artifacts, and documents regarding the history and remnants of wars in Vietnam. Through these efforts, it calls upon the public to raise awareness against unjust wars, while promoting the protection of peace and solidarity among people worldwide.
Currently, the museum features 9 permanent thematic galleries, alongside numerous short-term thematic displays and traveling exhibitions. The museum also frequently organizes exchanges between the domestic and international public and war witnesses. Through its exhibitions and activities, the museum has become one of the cultural and tourist destinations with the highest appeal to both Vietnamese and international audiences.
In recent years, the museum has welcomed approximately 1 million visitors from around the world each year. It was voted among the “Top 10 Most Attractive Museums in the World in 2018” by TripAdvisor and “Top 10 Best Museums in Asia in 2022” by the world-famous travel magazine The Travel.
